Welcome back!
What is art? Is art the picture you draw? The sounds you make? Or performances you do? What really is art?
I've struggled to answer this question ever since I was asked the questions in my grade 10 art class (Canadian school system). The discussion back then was whether art could be taught. Now sure someone can draw really well or play an instrument really well but is this art? Or is this the physical representation of art?
What if paintings, sculptures, symphonies, plays, literature, games, etc. are all just representation or mediums of the true form of the art you are trying to convey? If those are just mediums than is art? A feeling? A meaning? A spiritual entity?
To me art is both a feeling and a meaning. Think about it. When you look at a painting how do you as an individual make sense of it? What if the painting is abstract? People talk of an abstract painting having a different meaning to each person. If the medium (painting) were the true form of art then everyone would see the painting in the same way.
What about music? Is it just sound? For me certain music pieces also convey a sense of feeling and emotion. I can be filled with happy emotions, sad emotions, angry emotions, etc. Music seems to be more than just sound.
It is hard for me to explain what I think art really is because maybe it cannot be explained using words. I know this for sure though, art cannot be taught. You can teach someone how to use mediums to convey art (painting, instruments, dance, etc.) but you cannot teach someone the meaning or feeling of art. Art is more than just a medium, what it really is I am not entirely sure, and I may never know.
I know this post is a bit confusing, and I know you may not understand it at first, but think about the questions I asked and what they mean to you. What is art to you?
I thought of a few more topics over the weekend. I am going to keep the next post a surprise. Partly because I am not sure what I want to talk about, and partly because I want it to be a mystery.
Bye for now,
